Aarhus City Hall is one of Danish Modernism's major creations, and among the first buildings to introduce this new idiom in Denmark. Understandably, this new and controversial architecture sparked off an animated local debate. Newspapers in Aarhus stirred up a storm of protest against the project, and it's architects, Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller, were influenced by the local criticism. They had won first prize in the architectural competition in 1937 for a design without a tower. Not until the big debate had reached a climax was one added. Above all, the City Hall is the first building in which Functionalism was »softened« and it became highly important for Danish architecture. This book gives an account of the creation of Aarhus City Hall, a unique building which - eighty years after its inauguration - is still among the finest and most functional public buildings in Denmark.
